Friends of Safe Place, a nonprofit board for Safe Place, a child advocacy center in Washington County, sponsored the child-abuse summit called “Krimes Against Kids.”

The daylong summit also included author, journalist and political commentator Dominic Carter, who shared his story of abuse at the hands of his mother. A discussion on child trafficking in Maryland followed.

Trafficking is defined as the illegal trading of human beings, nationally and internationally, for the purpose of commercial sexual exploitation or forced labor. It’s a modern day form of slavery.

Statistics show 124 cases of child trafficking for sex and labor were reported statewide in 2014, according to the Maryland Human Trafficking Victim Identification and Services Survey.
