Tragedy on the Hudson: 6 Dead in Tourist Helicopter Crash Near Tribeca
That devastating helicopter crash into the Hudson River has left six people dead, including three children. The tragic incident occurred near Pier A Park in Hoboken, just across the water from Manhattan’s Tribeca neighborhood. According to officials, the victims were all from Spain — one pilot, two adults, and three children. The Pilot, a former Navy Seal.
NYC Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch shared chilling details during the press briefing:
“According to the manifest, aboard the helicopter were six people: one pilot, two adults, and three children. NYPD divers pulled four people from the crash site, and FDNY divers recovered an additional two. Immediate life-saving measures were undertaken on the vessels at the scene and at the adjoining pier. Four victims were pronounced dead on the scene, and two more were taken to local area hospitals, where, sadly, both succumbed to their injuries.”
The Police Commissioner went on to say that the aircraft, a Bell 206 helicopter operated by a local tour company, departed from the Downtown Manhattan Heliport at 2:59 p.m. and flew a typical sightseeing route — heading south, then north along Manhattan’s west side up to the George Washington Bridge. It turned south again along the New Jersey shoreline before tragically losing control and crashing just feet from the Hoboken coastline at around 3:08 p.m.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Dominic Carter makes the following points.
“This is just unimaginable. You think about these families — coming to New York for a once-in-a-lifetime vacation… and it ends like this? My heart breaks for them. We’ve got to do better when it comes to oversight and safety.”
“Tourism is the lifeblood of New York City, but so is responsibility. These joyrides shouldn’t cost people their lives.”
Our hearts are with the victims’ families during this unimaginable loss. 💔
In response to the tragedy, Senator Chuck Schumer is urging the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to revoke the license of the tour company involved, New York Helicopter.
Schumer is raising concerns over the company’s use of “Part 91” licenses, a classification that allows for looser oversight compared to commercial operations. The senator said the chopper “split in half” in midair before crashing, and he is demanding stricter regulations to prevent future tragedies.
“The time for half-measures is over. These ‘Part 91 loopholes’ are endangering lives,” Schumer stated. “This crash should never have happened.”
